It’s been nearly a week since my last cosplay showcase or feature piece and decided this morning that you’re all overdue one. I’ve been really busy doing hours of research and brainstorming for my own photography cosplay projects over the weekend and lost track of time in all honesty. Today’s a day for refocusing and giving you people what you want, a look at another cosplayer who’s caught my eye over the last few months.
On a recent trip over to DeviantART I found a set of cool Sucker Punch cosplay costume pictures and looked for more. I was shocked (maybe showing a bit of naivety) how many Baby Doll pictures I found and even more shocked at the quality. Many of the pictures had been touched up and given the full movie poster treatment, which looked very impressive.
One of the Baby Doll cosplayers that I noticed was Raffi, a tall, leggy blonde beauty from Hungary. Her look and the quality of the shots drew me in along with the character realistic poses. The final results are brilliant and her other pictures match this standard. At the tender age of 20 the sky really is the limit.

A Sit Down Q&A Session With Raffi Nyaunyau
Raffi was kind enough to answer this set of rather routine questions for us all so that we can leave a bit more about her. You won’t find these answers anywhere else, so count yourselves very lucky!
1. What made you get into cosplay?
On of my friends asked me to join a cosplay group in 2007. I was interested in cosplay since the first convention I visited, but really got into it a few years later.
2. How old were you when you started cosplaying?
If I remember correctly I was around 16, which was back in 2007.
3. What was your first costume?
My very first costume was Alexiel from Angel Sanctuary. I didn’t really know the character or the series back than but one of my friends asked me to be in his cosplay group. Also I was the only one who was tall enough for Alexsis’ character.
4. Do you make your own costumes?
I always do. I’ve learnt how to sew by myself and some help from a few books. For me, making my own costumes is a part of the “magic”, and it helps me to get into the character even more. It’s also much better to get compliments for your own work!
5. Where do your source your materials or the pieces for your costumes?
I live in the capital of my country and there are a lot of great, cheap fabric stores around. I use to check them regularly for fabric for my recent and future cosplays. There are a lot of different handcraft and hobby stores too, which I love to visit.
It’s always nice to meet fellow cosplayers around my shopping tours, especially a few weeks before the conventions! I order anything else (like wigs) on-line.
6. How long does the average costume take to make or put together?
It depends on how detailed the costume is. I can finish things pretty fast but if I have to make something that I don’t have experience with it can take some time. I’m also a creative type, so I used to remake parts of the costume while I work on it. In average it is 4-5 days, and 1-2 months for the complicated ones. I’m into a big project lately, which has been started months ago. I just didn’t have time or money to continue it till now, so we will see how fast I can be.
7. Do you design and make original costumes or do you create replicas of costumes worn by characters?
When it comes to cosplay I always start looking around my favourite characters or series to choose my next costume, so I didn’t made any originals yet. I would love to challenge myself with something new. I’m also planning to create original versions of one of my favourite characters: Lightning from FF XIII.
8. What would be your super power if you could only have one?
Aww, hardest question in the world! I would love to have wings. I just…love them. On animals, on humans, basically I love everything that includes beautiful feathers and it would be useful for cosplay too!
9. Do you attend cosplay conventions or events? If yes how many do you attend in an average year?
Every time, it’s even hard to count! Lets see, there are two different conventions in Hungary. One is pretty much anime related and the other used to be a mix of anime freaks and gamer geeks. There are 4-5 conventions and 3-4 smaller events in a year. Also, this year my friends and I started to visit conventions abroad (most of them are close to my country) so basically around 6-7 conventions a year….omg that’s a lot!!!
10. Who’s your favourite cosplayer? (Could be a friend or a famous personality in the cosplay scene)
I don’t really have a favourite, but there are many cosplayers who I look up to. Two of them are Shoko and Elffi, they are both amazing crafters and great at creating armored costumes. They really do inspire me a lot.
11. Who’s your favourite character to cosplay?
Obviously Lightning from FF XIII. She is my all time favourite and I can’t wait to finish her newest outfit! Most of the time I cosplay from games, movies and comics where I have many fandoms.
12. Favourite TV show, movie and band?
Game of Thrones, Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride and The Fifth Element, Infected Mushroom.
13. Do you cosplay for a living? If not, would you do it if the opportunity was offered to you?
Sadly no, but if I would have the choice I would prefer to do it as a spare time job. I know I would get rid of it pretty soon, but from time to time it would be nice to make some money from my most beloved hobby.
14. What’s going to be your next cosplay costume?
I believe Jaina Solo is the next on my list, but you can never be sure…anything can happen. Maybe I’ll change my mind or just realise that I’ll be boiled in a jumpsuit at the middle of the summer!
15. If you could cosplay as anyone and money was no issue who would it be?
Uhh tough one… Definitely one of Shunya Yamashita’s crazy and awesome armored angels! I love his work and I would love to do a cosplay tribute for is awesomeness, but first I have to save up some money!
